My Writing Journey : Carrol May Coleman Nelson

My books captivate children's imagination while providing cultural diversity in an enchanting way

I am a published author of children’s books, with an extensive background in Personal Development Coaching and Mentoring, as well as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. My books captivate children's imagination while providing cultural diversity in an enchanting way. Enabling parents to give children access to books they wish they had as a child.

I live in the UK but spent my early childhood growing up in the beautiful countryside of Mount Olive, Ginger Ridge, on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica. As a child, I grew up with a love of reading books and writing introduced to me by my aunt, who was a schoolteacher. Growing up and later when I became a mother, I struggled to find books with characters that looked like me and my children. Whilst working with disadvantaged children and young people in the care system, my passion for writing started around 1997. I wrote my first book and in 2005; I wrote my first children’s book.

However, it was not until 2016 after I finished working in Public Health; I got in contact with a publisher. I attended a writing workshop by the publisher which taught how to plan and structure a story. This inspired me to write my second children’s book ‘Dolly May and the Magical Enchanted Garden’, which was successfully published in 2019. My books aim to educate, empower, inspire and encourage children to realise their full potential and become anything they want to be, enabling children to step into a new reality and journey into a world of self-discovery. A world in which they can see themselves represented in their favourite stories and inspire them to dream big. There is No Limit to their Imagination!

Every child deserves the right to access quality literature that honours, values and reflects the reality in which they live in, and which also offers perspectives on lives beyond their own. Culturally diverse characters need to be represented within children’s books and better reflect the UK population, as a meaningful and accurate representation of the interconnected, diverse society in which our children are growing up. My books aim to deliver balanced content, showcasing cultural excellence without reducing characteristics of stereotypes or making them two–dimensional.

Young people deserve books with culturally diverse characters that are well developed and authentically portrayed. Stories should feature characters across multiple genres and within both fiction and non-fiction, allowing readers to experience the full spectrum of emotions when enjoying reading diverse stories at each stage of their development and growth.

My wish is for children and young people to feel represented in the books they read and empowered to pursue their dreams and transform their lives. My books captivate children's imagination while providing cultural diversity enchanting.
